Several weeks ago I was fortunate enough to illustrate for the New York Times Book Review. The book in question was the spy novel Typhoon by British author Charles Cumming which spins a web of good old fashioned CIA/MI6 intrigue against the backdrop of contemporary, metropolitan China. Oddly, the last time I worked for the Book Review, the novel I illustrated was set in post-Soviet Russia. Apparently I’m the go to guy for anything with a certain communist flavor.

Jobs for the Book Review, in which I’m asked to reduce an author’s 300+ page novel (which I haven’t actually read) into a measly little five inch drawing always make me a bit nervous so I was quite pleased, on the morning the review ran, to receive a very complimentary e-mail from Mr. Cumming himself. Not only is it nice to know that he approved of my interpretation of his book but, considering he is rumored to be a former member of MI6, I’m really just happy I didn’t offended him.
