I am attracted by the colors on these paintings.

Over the past few months
we’ve been working with the publishing pioneers at McSweeney’s, on a batch of illustrations for their avant-garde exploit, The San Francisco Panorama. The one-day, one-time-only newspaper is intended to do things the Internet cannot do. This is achieved in part by emphasizing large detailed design and images along with long form journalism; some features run beyond 30,000 words. Weighing in at over 300 gigantic 15 by 22 inch pages, The Panorama is a celebration of print and is an utterly immersive experience.
Ward Bushee, The San Francisco Chronicle’s editor describes The Panorama as, “the biggest, most creative and famously bylined edition of a newspaper ever printed.”
You can hear an entertaining audio interview with Dave Eggers and Oscar Villalon about the inner workings of this project at the bottom of this post.

It was fantastic to get an opportunity to work with the folks at McSweeney’s! Their publications are always a joy to explore. The Chabon essay on “Power Pop” I did a spot for was a really insightful look at a genre of popular music I only really caught the tail end of, but developed a new appreciation for during my pre-illustration research. “Big Star” is somewhat of an overlooked nugget of rock/pop brilliance, and when you scratch through all the sugar on the surface you reach a concentrated center of melancholy.
I can’t wait to dive into my copy of this when it arrives! I’m also honored to be sandwiched in with the work of Jesse and Wesley. Amazing work, guys! I love the lines and colors in both of your contributions!
Congratulations everyone! The images online look incredible, hopefully I’ll get to see one in print.
“We can’t remember any group of people being as excited about a publication as those for Panorama,” said City Lights’ Stacey Lewis:
I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this. Very exciting. It’s so much fun to contribute project that is bursting with creativity the way this is.
I cannot even begin to express how much I love this Newspaper!!!
And to top it all off it’s chalk full of LoudClouders! I’m so privileged to be in your company.
This Newspaper is so revolutionary, and I truly and wholeheartedly believe it could save the industry.
Bravo!
