I really love your abstract, even Cubist, take on Arlo!
The “line and paint layer” version reminds me of some of Picasso’s drawings.
I can very nearly guarantee that any illustrator who does likenesses has, at some time or another, drawn a man with a guitar. Many of us have done so more than once. Often, there is a tinge of guilt associated with the man with guitar portrait, as if one is not earning ones keep without adding some clever conceptual twist. But I find that it’s just this lack of a punchline which liberates me to really explore the image making. I hope it’s apparent from the illustration how much fun I had drawing Arlo. And his guitar.
Thanks to Josue Evilla for his art direction and layout work. I’m always thrilled to see my illustrations in such well designed magazines. Good design, it seems, has a way of making my own work look that much more professional.

Jesse, your piece looked great in the magazine.
Looking forward to working with you again soon.
Thanks again for the great work!
